The City of Sarnia has initiated the development of an Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) to:

  • promote active transportation;
  • develop and formalize an active transportation network;
  • diversify transportation options for residents; and
  • create a liveable and sustainable city.

The ATMP will provide a framework to develop and manage active transportation across the city in a manner that will connect, integrate, enhance, and expand the existing network and will identify a safe, comfortable, and year-round active transportation network for all ages and abilities. All investments recommended in the plan will phased in based on funding allocated during the annual budget process.

What is active transportation?

Active transportation refers to any method of human-powered transportation, including walking, cycling, inline-skating, skateboarding, and moving with mobility devices.

When we speak of an active transportation network, we’re talking about the development of a system of sidewalks, multi-use trails, crosswalks, on-road bikeways, and off-road trails that can be used to get to work or school, going shopping, running errands, visiting friends and family, or for recreation.

Why develop an active transportation network?

There are many benefits to developing and integrating active transportation into the City’s overall transportation network. From a transportation perspective it can improve safety, reduce congestion, and increase access and transportation choice. Environmentally the use of active transportation can assist in reducing carbon output and help fight climate change. From a public health perspective, active transportation helps increase overall physical activity in the city and can help fight instances of chronic disease. Economically, active transportation can assist in reducing household travel costs, and supporting local business.

Public engagement

Throughout the development of the ATMP, there will be multiple opportunities for public input and comment. You’re encouraged to stay connected to learn more about these opportunities to participate. Subscribe to the project using the Subscribe Widget on this page for updates on future engagement opportunities.

Your input will help inform the development of the active transportation master plan, which aims to improve walking, cycling, and other forms of active transportation in Sarnia, making it easier and safer for people to get around the city by strolling or rolling.

So far we've:

  • Hosted a survey and input map for community members to provide their input, experiences and insight as it relates to active transportation
  • Held an open house on May 15 with the chance to engage directly with the project team
  • Hosted walking and cycling tours on May 16, providing participants the chance to explore, review, and engage on the City's active transportation network

We're currently reviewing the data and comments from this first round of public engagement as we develop a draft plan. More public engagement opportunities will come throughout the process, stay tuned to this page and use the subscribe widget to stay informed.
