Mitton Streetscape Design
We’re looking towards the future of Mitton Street, and we want to hear from you.
The City is preparing to advance combined sewer separation on Mitton Street between Wellington and Davis Street, necessitating complete reconstruction of the roadway. Before that, we’re moving forward with detailed design work that will consider streetscape and safety improvements through multi-modal transportation opportunities.
Design and Public Input
We anticipate the opportunity to provide a complete street approach as part of this project, with design features that will beautify the area, improve safety, and accommodate road users of all ages and abilities, including capacity for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.
Mitton Village is a unique neighbourhood. The mixed residential and commercial land uses along Mitton Street make the neighbourhood an important target for revitalization efforts. The design will promote community connections, serving businesses and fostering a sense of community while enabling transportation options for multiple modes of travel.
As we look to develop the concepts that will become the foundation of our design work, it is our top priority to hear from residents and ensure that the newly revitalized area can reflect the vision residents, business owners and the community at large has for our future.
Project Scope
The initial phase of the project, from Wellington Street to Davis Street, is tentatively scheduled for 2026, pending budget allocation later this year.
The project will include considerations for:
- Combined sewer separation to strengthen sewer infrastructure against the impacts of extreme weather events
- New watermain, storm and sanitary sewer
- Road reconstruction
- Pedestrian and cycling facility enhancements
- Streetscaping
Future phases, with subsequent budget approval, will provide continuity of the reimagined Mitton Street beyond Davis Street though to George.
Initial Public Engagement Results
In July we hosted surveys for residents and business owners, alongside stakeholder engagement sessions. These inputs informed the design concepts outlined below.
Initial public engagement identified the following priorities /needs for the streetscape design:
- Safety & Traffic Calming
- Narrow lanes, curb extensions, and longer pedestrian signals.
- All-way pedestrian crossing at the five-way intersection of Mitton Street, Wellington Street and Ontario Street.
- Public Realm Enhancements
- Expanded parkette, shaded seating, and street furniture.
- Wider sidewalks for patios and events.
- Accessibility & Connectivity
- Smooth sidewalks, midblock crossings, and improved curb ramps.
- Active Transportation
- Bike lanes, parking, repair stations, and bike signals.
- Lighting & Wayfinding
- Pedestrian-scale lighting, string lights, and signage with historical storytelling.
- Storefront Activation
- Façade improvement programs, support for anchor tenants, and temporary uses for vacant spaces.
- Green Infrastructure
- Street trees, landscaped bump-outs, and seasonal planters.
- Event-Ready Streets
- Flexible street design with removable bollards, power access, and space for festivals.

Provide Your Input – Design concepts
Three potential streetscape concepts have been drafted based on background information review and initial public feedback held in July. We’re looking to residents and businesses for their input on the three alternative street cross sections at this time before refining and advancing a preferred design to the detailed stage.
You can provide your input by completing the survey later on (at the bottom of) this page or attending our Mitton Streetscape Design Public Information Centre in person.
Please continue reading to learn more about the three design concepts, and opportunities to provide input.
The following potential improvements are included in all three concepts:
- Opportunity for enhanced streetlighting and wayfinding signage
- Opportunity for streetscape activation for events and business in varying capacity
- Traffic calming at intersections through reduced crossing distances
- Opportunity to incorporate green space design and streetscape plantings
- Mid-Block crossings for pedestrian access
Concept Option 1 — Emphasis on Curb Extensions, On-Street Parking and Flex Spaces
Concept Option 1:
- Emphasizes traffic calming through curb extensions and narrower lane configuration
- Shared on-road cycling route promoted through calmer traffic in the area – similar to a downtown / mainstreet setting
- Maintains on-street parking while introducing flexible spaces for patios, pop-ups, or events
- Provides a higher level of pedestrian safety and comfort while also focusing on the opportunity for activation of the streetby local businesses
- Maintains a high percentage of the existing parking spaces in the corridor

Concept Option 2 — On-Street Bicycle Lanes
Concept Option 2:
- Introduces dedicated bike lanes on road, adjacent to vehicular traffic
- Balances vehicular flow with active transportation infrastructure
- Enhances safety for cyclists without major grading challenges
- Reduces some of the potential street activation space compared to Option 1
- Maintains less on street parking compared to other 2 scenarios

Concept Option 3 — Separated Bicycle Lanes
Concept Option 3:
- Features bicycle lanes separated from both vehicular traffic and pedestrian space
- Prioritizes cyclist safety and comfort, especially for families and less experienced riders
- Creates a more defined multimodal corridor with clear separation of uses
- Reduces some of the potential street activation space compared to Option 1
- Maintains a higher percentage of the existing parking spaces in the corridor
