Consultation has concluded

The City of Sarnia is seeking public input regarding proposed commemorative opportunities for the Sarnia Arena.

A request has been received to rename the Sarnia Arena in Honour of Pat “Whitey” Stapleton, who is recognized as the first person from Sarnia to play in the National Hockey League.

Notice is being given in order to consult with external stakeholders in the community and to identify possible objections and/or positive responses to the proposal, in accordance with the Naming/Re-Naming of Streets, Property, Buildings & Public Land Policy and the City’s Notice Policy.

Public input is also being sought regarding other commemorative opportunities which could be implemented to honour significant accomplishments in the sport of hockey, such as a Hockey Hall of Fame.

The public feedback received during the consultation process will be provided to Sarnia City Council for their consideration, at which time it may consider a variety of options including, but not limited to:

• Approval of the renaming proposal, as presented

• Maintaining the current name (Sarnia Arena)

• Approval of an alternative form of recognition

• Consideration of other commemorative opportunities to honour significant accomplishments in the sport of hockey

• Taking no further action with respect to the proposals

Written comments regarding the proposals should be submitted to the City Clerk’s Department no later than noon on Monday, April 26, 2021 by email clerks@sarnia.ca or by mail 255 Christina St. N. Box 3018 Sarnia, ON N7T 7N2.
