Urban Forest Management Plan

The City of Sarnia is developing our first-ever Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP). The UFMP will establish a long-term vision, goals, and targets for the maintenance, protection, and enhancement of trees across the entire city.

The UFMP will be based on a review of the current state of urban forestry in Sarnia alongside identification of strengths, gaps, needs, and priorities for urban forest management in our community. The Plan will guide the City and its partners in responding to a wide range of challenges facing the urban forest, such as urban development, climate change and extreme weather, pests and invasive species, and many others. Implementing the Plan will improve tree health and longevity and ensure that Sarnia’s urban forest continues to provide many benefits and services to the entire community.

The plan’s goals and outcomes will largely relate to trees on City property. While Sarnia’s UFMP may consider strategies to encourage and enhance tree planting and retention on public and private lands in the city, it will not regulate or prohibit tree management or removal on private lands if adopted.

Be sure to check out this page's FAQ widget for more information.

Provide your input

The City will seek input from internal stakeholders; external partners and agencies; Indigenous stakeholders; and all other members of the community to help shape Sarnia’s UFMP.

Development of the Plan will include two key phases of engagement and consultation. The first phase of consultation including stakeholder engagement, public survey, and Public Information Centre is now complete.

Further opportunities for public input will be shared on this page, including public review of the draft UFMP document and feedback opportunities on the strategic direction and action items outlined .

Community members are also welcome to share their thoughts about Sarnia’s urban forest at any time via email to parksandrecreation@sarnia.ca, or by telephone at 519-332-0330 ext. 3301.
