Background

The City of Sarnia is seeking community input on a “SARNIA” letter sign to be located in the downtown waterfront area.

At its meeting on November 22, 2021 Sarnia City Council endorsed the installation of a "SARNIA" letter sign on city-owned waterfront land as part of a placemaking and tourism initiative. The need for placemaking attractions along the waterfront was identified during the first round of public engagement for the Waterfront Master Plan.

Placemaking signage has become very popular in many communities across Canada and globally over the past few years. The signs are a known tourism draw, with visitors and families interacting with the signs for photos that are then shared on social media. This creates promotional opportunities for the community.

The project is being implemented with support from Imperial Oil. Imperial's community grant program has committed $55,000 in non-repayable funding towards the cost of this project.

About the Sign

The sign includes six (6) aluminum letters that spell "SARNIA". Each letter is 72" (6 ft) height in size, with a clear polycarbonate face and integrated RGB LED lighting. The sign is internally illuminated and can be manually programmed to display different colours. The sign will be installed on a concrete bed with concrete footings.

Design Options

Three design options are proposed at this time. Please review the images and provide your feedback through the survey found below. The design options are also provided as a PDF in the Documents section for download.

Please note that the red, blue and yellow colours are for demonstration purposes only. The sign will be programmed to display different colours in recognition of events and special occasions.
