Consultation has concluded

Sarnia’s waterfront is a vital part of the City’s history, identity, and community and if you’ve ever visited the waterfront, you likely have your own reasons why it plays such an important role in the community. Today the waterfront is at a crossroads and Council is looking to establish a renewed vision and plan for the area.

In looking toward the future, the City has partnered with a consulting team specializing in waterfront planning to help develop a new master plan for the Sarnia Waterfront. The ultimate goals of this plan will be to strengthen the role of the waterfront as a community and recreation hub; stimulate economic development; increase connections to the Downtown; and ensure its continued vitality for future generations.

To help us achieve these goals, the project team will be looking to rely on the experiences and knowledge of our community members to develop a vision that reflects their priorities and values. After all, nobody knows the waterfront better than those who use it!

This page has been set up to keep the community up to date on the Waterfront Master Plan and will act as a hub for information on the project and opportunities to get involved. Be sure to keep an eye on this page for updates on the project and opportunities to participate in the creation of the Waterfront Master Plan.

WHAT IS A MASTER PLAN?

A master plan is a document that outlines a future vision for a place or area, and is intended to help guide its evolution, preservation, development, or redevelopment over a long-term period of time (typically ± 20 years). Master plans are not detailed design plans but rather they:

  • provide high level (conceptual) direction intended to set out goals, objectives, and strategies to manage the evolution an area over time;

  • define what is important about a place and directs how its character should be conserved, enhanced, and celebrated;

  • outline the types of development and/or activities that are to take place in an area; and

  • lay out an action plan to implement and achieve the vision and objectives of the community for the area.

PROJECT SCOPE

The project will be looking at the waterfront lands from Sarnia Bay Marina and Centennial Park down to Rainbow Park at Devine and Christina Streets.
